Beginning in 1910 a large number African-Americans left the South for northern cities, the West, and Midwest to avoid discrimination and violence. They also hoped to find better job opportunities, education for their children, and greater equality. The large concentration in New York of African-American intellectuals and cultural circles were known as the Harlem Renaissance and its influence grew nationwide in the 1920s.
